Vong Phaophanit

Tok tem dean kep kin bo dai – what falls to the earth but can’t be eaten

Bamboo – an essential part of life in Laos – and lead which has an equally strong presence in England are the principal materials used by artist Vong Phaophanit. In this installation a forest of bamboo hangs from the ceiling creating a magical and mysterious atmosphere. This exhibition reveals the bizarre incongruities as a result of the collision of different cultures. Phaphanit, a political refugee from his own country, is one of the most exciting young artists working in Britain.

This installation was first showcased at the Chisenhale Gallery, London, 1991.
