Alan Davie

Works on Paper

Artist Alan Davie is a leading figure in the history of 20th Century painting. This exhibition brings together the largest group of his works on paper ever shown in one place. Davie first studied art at Edinburgh College in 1937 and travelled extensively in Europe after the war. His inclination towards an intuitive, improvised kind of painting is reinforced by the spontaneity of his jazz playing. He started working seriously on paper in 1962. His drawings are magical and mysterious, bright and bold.

Works on Paper is part of the Sounds Like Birmingham festival.
