A lovely morning spent in Birches Green Infant School

Black Country Voyages disembark in Birches Green Infant School in Erdington.

We spent a lovely morning with the first class (5 years old) talking about canal’s life and doing some gorgeous buntings.

Kate started talking about canals, their story, boats and how people used to live on them. Children were already informed about this because they went at Black Country Museum with their teachers and because they have a canal just behind their school.

Children told to us the thing they remember about Black Country and canals…. they remembered the most weird and strange things! I was really funny hear their memories.

We showed some pictures of the canal life, objects and tools and we focused their attention of shapes and colors of the subject of pictures.

Then, they seat at their tables and started drawing with oil pastels their own colorful pattern inspired on canal’s art.

After this, children started to do the same action but using bunting and fabric instead of paper and oil pastels:  they planned their own design and then they decorated buntings with some pieces of felt and fabric taking inspirations from their drawings.

In the end we collected all buntings and shown them to the class.

Children are really happy  and proud of their work because buntings will be displayed on the Black Country Voyages’ boat over the summer and a lot of people will see their art work!

…A piece of Birches Green Infant School will travel with us through canals!
