Those Were The Decades

As part of Ikon’s 50th year we present a series of events focusing on the five decades of Ikon’s history and the social, political and cultural context.

Our first event in this series starts on Saturday 29 March at the Library of Birmingham and celebrates the 1960s – The rise of counterculture. A full day of talks, screenings and discussions including:

  • Illustrated talk by Dr Kieran Connell, University of Birmingham exploring the influence of the student protests and popular culture of the late 1960s
  • Panel discussion on Ikon in the 1960s with artists John Salt and Jesse Bruton
  • Exploring the Library archives with Dr Chris Upton
  • Film screening of Motorcity Music Years: Second City Sinners (1992), plus Q & A with filmmakers Jonnie Turpie and Roger Shannon
  • Flatpack Film Festival screening of Medium Cool (1969), Cert. 15

Those Were The Decades is organised in collaboration with Flatpack Film Festival, The Library of Birmingham, University of Birmingham and Writing West Midlands.
