Those Were The Decades – 1970s

As part of Ikon’s 50th year we present a series of events focusing on the five decades of Ikon’s history and the social, political and cultural context.

Our second event in this series takes place on Saturday 14 June at the Library of Birmingham and celebrates the 1970s – Politics and Protest. A full day of talks, screenings and discussions including:

  • Illustrated talk No future? The Politics of Crisis with Dr. Chris Moores, University of Birmingham
  • Panel discussion Ikon in the 1970s with artist Ian Emes, former Arts Lab co-ordinator Peter Stark, Jeanette Koch, former Ikon Gallery Manager, and Simon Chapman, former Ikon Director
  • Illustrated talk Popular Political Sexual Raw with Prof. Johnny Golding, Birmingham City University
  • Illustrated talk The Dark Side of the Moon with artist and original Pink Floyd animator Ian Emes
  • Film screening of Motorcity Music Years: Birmingham Blues (1992), plus Q & A with film producers Chris Phipps and Roger Shannon, plus Jim Simpson, former Black Sabbath Manager and Director of Big Bear Music
  • Flatpack Film Festival screening of punk classic Jubilee. Directed by Derek Jarman (1978), Cert.18

Those Were The Decades is organised in collaboration with Flatpack Film Festival, The Library of Birmingham, University of Birmingham and Writing West Midlands.
