Ikon staff make a special visit to Birches Green Primary School

Kate started a special workshop for Year One children by talking about canals, boats and how people used to live on them.

The children knew a lot as they had visited the Black Country Museum with their teachers earlier in the year and had learnt about canals.

The children told to us about the things they remembered from their visit to the Black Country and to the canals. We showed some pictures of historic canals life, we looked at historic objects objects and tools and we focused their attention of shapes and colours in the pictures.

Next the children worked on designing their own patters using oil pastels inspired by canal art, they worked on their own designs and then shared thir work with the rest of the classroom.

After this the children started to do the same action but using bunting and fabric instead of paper and oil pastels:  they planned their own design and then they decorated buntings with some pieces of felt and fabric taking inspirations from their drawings.
